The most famous Moldovan wine with a long and exciting history. In 1878, at the World Exposition in Paris closed
tastings, a dry wine of an intensive-ruby colour has impressed the French experts. They were sure that it was a Bordeaux wine. To their surprise, it came from a virtually unknown village on the bank of the Dniester. It was the first time that Negru de Purcari won a gold medal at an international exhibition. After its rebirth, the nowadays version of Negru de Purcari continues to amaze.
The unusual blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Saperavi and 5% Rara Neagră, presents a complex and intense bouquet with hints of sweet fruits – ripe plums and figs. It develops in time gaining soft flavours of spices and saffron towards the end of the taste. Over the years, Negru de Purcari has been appreciated with over 50 medals at world competitions (finewineguide2018).
- Joe Fattorini’s Tasting Note: ““The Queen of England’s favourite wine”. This is the proud boast of Negru de Purcari on account of multiple purchases of the 1990 vintage by Buckingham Palace. She’s not the only one, the Soviet Kremlim loved the dense currant flavours and forest floor complexity. Lovely with mushroom dishes, Barnsley Chops and Pork.”
- An intriguing blend of 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Saperavi, the deeply coloured and ancient red grape of Georgia and 5% the native Moldovan Rara Neagra.
- The wine is a deep ruby colour with a mix of red and black fruits character together with spice from its three-year sojourn in French oak barrels.
- Full-bodied and with ample if ripe and fine-grained tannins, and some beguiling earthy notes from its bottle age.
- Awards: 90 points Wine Enthusiast.
- Food Pairing Suggestions: This wine would be perfect with any rustic red meat based dish or full-flavoured cheese.
